The biomass dilemma: Are there ways out of the "chicken and egg problem"?
Agriculture plays a key role in the transformation towards a sustainable industrial bioeconomy. Only by providing biomass in sufficient quantity and quality can scaling projects be successfully implemented. However, implementation harbours challenges: Farmers are often reluctant to convert their production as long as there is no long-term security of supply - and conversely, buyers can only rely on sufficient quantities if the farms have converted. How can this cycle be broken?
In the Learning Lounge, an example is presented of how new product processes can provide farms with a secure framework for the conversion of their production.
