The Federal Government's high-tech agenda: Biotechnology as a key technology of the bioeconomy

On 31 July 2025, the Federal Cabinet adopted the new High-Tech Agenda - an important step towards making Germany technologically and innovatively fit for the future. One of the aims of the agenda is to revitalise technologies and innovations "Made in Germany" as a trademark. Six key technologies are being specifically promoted, one of which is biotechnology, which is a key technology of the bioeconomy. The focus is also on quantum technology, microelectronics, fusion and climate-neutral energy generation as well as technologies for climate-neutral mobility. The first projects are scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2027.

Why biotechnology is a key technology of the bioeconomy

Targeted investments are intended to make Germany one of the leading locations for biotechnology worldwide. The aim is to build a resource-efficient and competitive industry and to sustainably increase national value creation. The focus here is on innovative approaches to industrial biotechnology, particularly at the interfaces to artificial intelligence and engineering, which also play a key role in the bioeconomy.

Significance for TransBIB and the bioeconomy

We see ourselves as an "accelerator" of research, innovation and transfer along the entire bioeconomic value chain:

  • We can network partners from research and industry in order to advance industrial biotechnology initiatives more efficiently.

  • With the TransBIB One-Stop-Shop, we are creating a central platform to support start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises. A skill pool of experts from the German bioeconomy is available here to act as contacts or sparring partners for specialised questions.

  • In addition, our matching platform makes it possible to find specific partners for raw materials, products, expertise or projects.

  • We provide various clear databases, including for searching for existing scaling infrastructure, so that ideas and innovations can grow and be implemented as quickly as possible.
