Learning Nugget: Certification made easy – certification systems for wood products in the building sector
Wood plays a central role in climate-friendly and resource-efficient construction. However, choosing sustainable materials does not end with the decision to use wood – it is also crucial to consider where it comes from, how it has been processed and how these aspects can be documented in a traceable manner.
This asynchronous learning unit therefore provides a structured overview of relevant certification systems for wood products and classifies them along the entire life cycle – from raw material extraction to processing and product manufacturing, the utilisation phase in buildings, and finally demolition and disposal.
Furthermore, the link to the building level is established and explained how classic product and forest certifications fit into an overarching building certification. The focus is on the DGNB building certification process. Step by step, it shows the role played by environmental information on construction products, how this is incorporated into Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and how life cycle assessments serve as a methodological basis.
The learning unit thus combines basic knowledge about certifications with a practical understanding of their significance in the planning and evaluation process for sustainable buildings.
The module is aimed at anyone interested in gaining an initial insight into certification in the building sector at product or building level.
