Workshop: Protein Hub Pro-to-X I Information and Networking Event
Engineering proteins are a renewable polymer feedstock with great potential as biological building blocks (“bio-nylon”) for substitution or customised functionality. Their diversity in structure and function (e.g. bonding, encapsulation, coating) makes them an attractive raw material base for various industries (e.g. plastics, textiles, fine chemicals, construction chemicals, personal care). Germany has an excellent foundation in protein research – ranging from extraction and chemical modification to bespoke biotechnological production.
What is missing, is a centre of excellence covering the entire value chain of protein-based functional materials to strengthen the economy in terms of competitiveness, resource sovereignty and innovation through key technologies.
As part of a half-day workshop on 15 June 2026, we (Fraunhofer IGB and the TransBIB project partners: RWTH Aachen University and Leibniz University Hannover) would like to present the concept for the Protein Hub Pro-to-X and, in dialogue with the entire value chain, refine the areas of action and content. With a shared guiding vision, we will then approach the BMWE to seek support through public funding.
