That was the TransBIB Symposium 2025
The TransBIB symposium kicked off on 26 June 2025 in Greifswald with a warm welcome from representatives of the University of Greifswald and Dr Matthias Scholz from the TransBIB team. In his introduction, Scholz emphasised the importance of regional innovation structures for a sustainable bioeconomy - and the role that TransBIB can play as a support structure.

Day 1 - Exchange, impulses and practical innovations
The first keynote speech was given by Josephine Neubert from the Greifswald Moor Centrum, who spoke on behalf of the "Alliance of Pioneers". She impressively emphasised how much the rewetting of moors not only benefits climate protection, but also regional value chains. Michael Engel from the Cosun Beet Company then took a look at bioeconomic transformation paths in the industry in his keynote speech - and at the same time gave a practical foretaste of the factory tour on the following day.
Dr Monika Weinhold from the VDI Technology Centre then provided information on current funding opportunities for bioeconomic projects and gave valuable tips on how companies can find and use suitable programmes.
One particular highlight was the presentation of the new TransBIB One-Stop Shop by Dr Christopher Timm. This digital entry point for companies, research and administration is intended to significantly simplify access to the industrial bioeconomy in future - with information, tools and direct contact to relevant players. The official launch took place at the symposium and the platform will go live in September 2025.
Other TransBIB services were also presented: In the "TransBIB Jungle Camp", companies can explore the often confusing path through certification processes together with the TransBIB team. The TransBIB company analysis offers individual support for interested companies on the path to biologisation. A new format on the topic of "Carbon Management" has also been launched: The aim is to promote a trusting exchange of knowledge on an increasingly strategically important topic through protected workshops.
A central element of the day was the diverse pitch presentations, in which companies, start-ups and research institutions presented their bio-based ideas, technologies and concepts - without predetermined topics, which ensured particular diversity and openness.
FLEXCELERATE Solutions GmbH showed how production plants can be planned efficiently in future with modular, ready-to-use units. Siemens AG presented a digital simulation solution that can be used to optimise production processes and transparently map life cycle costs. The GEA presented its support for scaling up fermentative and cell culture-based processes - an important step towards industrial implementation.
Several companies were also represented in the construction sector: Halm GmbH uses straw as a natural insulating material, while Seegrashandel GmbH was able to report that seagrass has already been successfully used as an insulating material in over 500 construction projects. Urban Beta UG presented a modular construction system made from recyclable components. Hentschke Bau GmbH plans to develop and market recyclable building material panels on a larger scale in the future.
In the area of circular economy and resource management, the DBFZ presented its resource database for bioeconomic planning. Otto A. Müller Recycling GmbH showed how regional material cycles can be established through intelligent upcycling and recycling. The joint project IRRMa - represented by S&F Software GmbH /Synqony - presented digital tools for visualising and strengthening municipal circular economies.
The BENEFICIAL DESIGN INSTITUTE presented its approach to converting textile waste from fast fashion or workwear into biocompatible plastic (PHB) - an innovative raw material for packaging, biomedicine or agricultural products. AppliChrom GmbH presented analytical chromatography solutions for the identification of chemical and biological compounds. IMA Karlsruhe GmbH presented a DNA-based method for precisely analysing organic waste streams. The Lausitzer Naturfaser Ebersbach UG uses residual biomass to produce disposable products suitable for everyday use.
In the chemical sector, Amynova Polymeres GmbH presented its starch-based biopolymers. JOWAT SE is pursuing the ambitious goal of completely converting all adhesive components to bio-based materials. oilRoq GmbH demonstrated innovative reactor technologies for oleochemistry and special apparatus engineering. With a view to alternative energy paths, ENERTRAG GmbH showed how methanol can be produced from sugar biorefineries.
Climate Oil™ introduced a visionary perspective: By 2030, it should be possible to produce oils and biomass directly from CO₂ - a decisive step towards closing the carbon cycle. Finally, Mercer Rosenthal GmbH presented its Lignin Centre, which processes lignin specifically for various applications and develops next-generation bio-based products together with partners.
The day ended with an informal finale at an exclusive beer tasting at the Brauerei Störtebeker. Discussions continued in a convivial atmosphere over special flavours - many of which are not commercially available - new contacts were made and collaborations intensified.
Day 2: Practice meets perspective - company management & WIR! alliances
Early in the morning, the bus travelled from Greifswald station to the Cosun Beet Company in Anklam. On site, the participants were able to experience various aspects of production in small groups - from traditional sugar production to bioethanol and biomethane production through to approaches to the circular economy.
In addition, the northern German WIR! alliances presented their approaches to sustainable regional development. Among the participants were Plant3, Physics for Food, biogeniV, ArtIFARM, region 4.0, MaltFungiProtein and BaMS e.V.
Here it became clear: the north-east has arrived in the bioeconomy.
