TransBIB Round Tables: What does the bioeconomy need to gain acceptance in society?

How can the industrial bioeconomy achieve widespread acceptance? The TransBIB project explored this question through a series of round-table discussions. In these moderated discussions, stakeholders from the worlds of science, business, politics and society came together to openly share their experiences, expectations and concerns regarding bio-based products.

Among other things, examples from

  • the construction industry (bio-based building materials, circular construction),

  • the chemicals sector (bio-based platform chemicals, biorefineries, new materials),

  • as well as the field of meat substitutes (acceptance, purchasing decisions, trust in alternatives).

Across all topics, it became clear that bio-based solutions are generally perceived as an important contribution to greater sustainability – yet uncertainties remain. Frequently raised were questions regarding the actual environmental impact over the entire life cycle, health aspects, prices and everyday availability. Equally clear was the desire for comprehensible, scientifically sound information and for clear political guidelines.

Three key areas for action can be identified from the round-table discussions:

  1. Greater awareness: Transparent communication tailored to specific target groups builds trust and enables informed decisions.

  2. Affordable alternatives: Sustainable products must be economically competitive and widely available in order to achieve widespread adoption.

  3. Strengthening regional cycles: Short supply chains, regional raw materials and closed-loop material cycles increase both environmental resilience and resilience to crises.

The discussions show that the transition to a bioeconomy can only succeed if technological innovations are combined with social acceptance, appropriate framework conditions and open dialogue.
