Research meets practice - driving force of the Lower Rhine competence region for bioeconomy
The Lower Rhine region is characterised by a mix of predominantly agricultural areas and urban centres. The soils in the Lower Rhine region are among the most fertile in Europe. The Lower Rhine has long been a strong logistics and transit region between the Netherlands and the Rhine-Ruhr and Cologne-Bonn metropolitan regions.

Projects
The Institute GEMIT of the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences can promote and network the Niederrhein region as a model region for bioeconomy through:
Development of innovative value chains: GEMIT analyses and optimises processes for the use of regional biomass, in particular residual and side streams. This enables a sustainable and resource-conserving circular economy.
Practical research projects: Close collaboration with companies, research institutions and authorities results in new approaches to the efficient use of biological resources. Projects such as TransBiB and Realise-Bio show how circular value chains can be established across borders.
Digital solutions for the bioeconomy: GEMIT develops intelligent digital tools to connect stakeholders along the bioeconomy supply chain and make processes more efficient.
Knowledge transfer and networking: As an interface between science and business, GEMIT offers practical advice, organises specialist events and supports companies in the implementation of sustainable business models.
Through these measures, GEMIT strengthens the innovative power of the Lower Rhine region and helps to establish it as a leading model region for a sustainable bioeconomy. Companies and partners who would like to become part of this network are cordially invited to exchange ideas with GEMIT.
The GEMIT Institute of the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences is a leading research centre for logistics, supply chain management, process optimisation and IT based in Mönchengladbach. Our focus is on application-orientated research - particularly in bioeconomics.
We use our expertise specifically in projects such as TransBiB and Realise-Bio. Realise-Bio investigates how regional biomass, in particular residual and side streams, can be used sustainably and innovatively. The aim is to establish circular value chains in the border region between Germany and the Netherlands. In doing so, we contribute our in-depth knowledge of logistics and process management - a decisive factor for the success of the model projects implemented.
In addition to research projects, we develop digital tools for bioeconomy supply chains and support companies with practical solutions to optimise their business processes. GEMIT bridges the gap between science and practice - for innovations that really work.
Founded in 2007, the institute is currently headed by Prof. Dr Kathleen Diener and Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Holger Beckmann.
